The test measures the amount of albumin (al-bew-min) and globulins (glah-bew-lins) in your blood. Albumin and globulins are types of protein. A small amount of your blood is put on a special plate. An electric current is sent through the plate. The protein electrophoresis test is often used to find abnormal substances called M proteins.

Serum total protein, also called plasma total protein or total protein, is a biochemical test for measuring the total amount of protein in blood plasma or serum. Protein in the plasma is made up of albumin and globulin. The globulin in turn is made up of α1, α2, β, and γ globulins. In one series, serum protein electrophoresis showed a spike or localized band in only 82 percent of patients with multiple myeloma.

Serum is used in numerous diagnostic tests, as Serum vs. Plasma: What’s the Difference? Serum and plasma both come from the liquid portion of the blood that remains once the cells are removed, but that’s where the similarities end. Serum is the liquid that remains after the blood has clotted. Plasma is the liquid that remains when clotting is prevented with the addition of an anticoagulant.

Consequently, urine protein electrophoresis is recommended in all patients suspected of having a plasma cell dyscrasia. Plasma/serum proteins of fetal blood samples (N = 88) obtained under ultrasound guidance between the 18th and the 39th week of pregnancy, of blood samples collected from premature infants (N = 19), newborns at term (N = 20) and children of less than 5 years of age (N = 55) were analysed by high-resolution two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The most dominant plasma proteins, albumin and immunoglobulin (Ig)G, typically comprise up to 70% of the plasma proteome in abundance.

Serum protein electrophoresis (SPE) separates proteins into multiple bands using an electrical field and can be done in various media, including cellulose acetate (largely replaced), agarose gel or liquid within a capillary tube (capillary zone). These all separate the proteins into distinct bands or fractions. Tools to measure the acute-phase response have been utilized widely in veterinary medicine. Evaluation by plasma protein electrophoresis (PPEP) has become an increasingly common assay in veterinary clinical pathology. Commercial reagents for serum amyloid A (SAA) have been validated for use in a var … The serum protein electrophoresis test is often used to check for the presence of abnormal proteins called M proteins, which might be indicative of a form of cancer called myeloma (cancer that affects WBCs called plasma cells in the bone marrow) and other conditions such as Waldenström macroglobulinemia, monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), or primary amyloidosis. Serum protein electrophoresis is a simple, affordable method of separating blood proteins based on electrical charge, size and shape.
